Day 83 of 110: Looking back to 1919

Earlier this year, another chapter in our area returned some items that once belonged to a member of our chapter - Mrs. W. O. Spencer. Among the items were old state yearbooks. Naturally curious, I thumbed through and found the report given for my chapter at the 18th annual state conference in 1919.

GENERAL JOSEPH WINSTON CHAPTER
Winston

The General Joseph Winston Chapter started its year's work with the honor of entertaining the 1917 Conference.

The Chapter has been much interested in various phases of War Relief Work, giving to the Red Cross $38 for 100 percent membership; investing $100 in War Savings Stamp; $43 towards the Liberty Loan National Society; sending 200 glasses of jelly to the base hospital at Camp Greene; through various organizations numbers of sweaters and socks.

The Chapter gave a large number of garments for relief work in Belgium.

We have co-operated wit the Red Cross in making surgical dressings and war garments.

Each month the Chapter has a social afternoon at which a silver collection is taken. This is netting quite a nice sum which will be used soon in some phase of the War Relief Work.

Respectfully Submitted,
Edna G. Maslin, Regent

The same State Yearbook noted General Joseph Winston Chapter members serving on the following NC DAR Committees.

Committee on Preservation of Historic Spots - Mrs. William N. Reynolds
Committee on D.A.R. Magazines - Mrs. Charles Shelton
Committee on Conservation of the Home - Mrs. Lindsay Patterson
Committee on Patriotic Education - Mrs. John L. Gilmer
