Last week I had the honor of presenting the DAR Youth Citizenship Medal to a student at London Elementary. You may recall that on day 1 of our 110 day anniversary celebration, I mentioned Camp London at London Elementary School. Of course, the teacher and creator of Camp London is NC's DAR Outstanding Teacher of American History - Mr. Marshall. After determining that Mr. Marshall had a student deserving of the DAR Youth Citizenship Medal, we decided to present it to the student during Camp London.
When I arrived, the 'soldiers' were in their camp, dressed in uniform and excitedly learning about the Civil War period of American History. With the troops in formation, I had the honor of presenting the DAR Youth Citizenship Medal to one of the fifth grade students after the students all agreed that every army needs at least one soldier with a medal on his - or her - uniform. The deserving young woman received numerous accolades from her peers and teachers, all were obviously in agreement that she deserved the award. And it was so rewarding for me to be able to present it to her! Yet another great experience through DAR.
