Day 56 of 110: The Ideal Home

Like many of you, I'm a Downton Abbey fan. This early 20th century period show follows the changes in English society - which includes changes in technology. In various episodes, the kitchen staff learn about an electric mixer, toaster and (gasp) refrigerator! The DAR Museum's current exhibit explores the introduction of such 'modern conveniences' into the household and how they impact the evolving role of women - a role that changed perhaps most dramatically during the early 20th century.

Creating the Ideal Home, 1800-1939: Comfort and Convenience in America is an exhibition exploring how we got from the fireplace an washing clothes by hand to the many conveniences we take for granted today.

If you're in DC by August 30, 2014 (which is when the exhibition closes) be sure to drop by the DAR Museum and see this exhibit. I can't wait to see it myself in June!
